🌦️ Dos & Don’ts During Extreme Weather Conditions
Weather can be unpredictable. During extreme events like floods, thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, or heat waves, it’s crucial to know what to do — and what not to do — to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Here’s a simple guide to help you stay prepared and protected.
🌊 When There is a Flood
✅ Dos:
- Stay tuned to official weather alerts and NSDMA updates.
- Move to higher ground immediately if water levels rise.
- Disconnect electrical appliances before water enters your home.
- Store clean drinking water; floodwater may be contaminated.
- Keep an emergency kit ready (torch, batteries, dry food, medicines).
- Follow evacuation instructions from disaster management teams.
❌ Don’ts:
- Don’t walk or drive through moving floodwaters.
- Don’t touch electrical equipment when wet or standing in water.
- Don’t spread rumors — rely only on official sources.
- Don’t return to flooded areas until declared safe.
⛈️ Where There is a Thunderstorm
✅ Dos:
- Stay indoors and avoid open fields or tall trees.
- Unplug electrical and electronic devices.
- If outdoors, crouch low in an open area — minimize ground contact.
- Stay away from water bodies and metal objects.
- Keep pets indoors and safe.
❌ Don’ts:
- Don’t use wired phones or electrical appliances during lightning.
- Don’t shelter under trees — they attract lightning.
- Don’t lie flat on the ground; it increases lightning current exposure.
🌧️ When There is Heavy Rainfall
✅ Dos:
- Check weather forecasts before traveling.
- Ensure proper drainage around your home.
- Avoid unnecessary travel through low-lying areas.
- Wear waterproof shoes to prevent infections.
- Stay alert for landslides in hilly regions.
❌ Don’ts:
- Don’t drive fast on wet roads — brakes may fail.
- Don’t let children play in rainwater — it may be contaminated.
- Don’t ignore flash flood or road closure warnings.
☀️ When There is a Heat Wave
✅ Dos:
- Drink plenty of water even if you’re not thirsty.
- Wear light-colored, loose cotton clothes.
- Stay indoors during peak hours (12 PM to 3 PM).
- Eat light meals with fruits and vegetables.
- Use umbrellas or hats when outside.
❌ Don’ts:
- Don’t drink alcohol or caffeine — they cause dehydration.
- Don’t leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
- Don’t ignore signs of heat exhaustion — seek help immediately.
⚠️ Remember: Disasters can’t always be prevented, but being informed, alert, and prepared can save lives.
